Hulu’s best show of 2021 (it currently holds a rare 100% on Rotten Tomatoes) isn’t a true crime documentary, or even a true crime adaptation. No, Hulu’s biggest hit of 2021 was Only Murders in the Building, a comedic and somehow generally light-hearted show about three residents in a posh New York apartment building who set out to solve a murder. Starring Martin Short, Steve Martin, and Selena Gomez, it’s a show with the perfect mix of escapism and intrigue that makes for solid comfort television. In fact, it was the most watched comedy ever on the streaming service, according to Vulture.
For anyone who needs a reminder on where the first season of the show left off, Charles (Martin), Oliver (Short), and Mabel (Gomez) discovered one of their neighbors dead. As true crime fans, the trio banned together to attempt to solve the murder, although secretly Mabel knew the victim and kept it from Charles and Oliver. Eventually, Mabel’s past came to light, and the trio connected all the dots and found out it was none other than Charles’ new girlfriend who was the killer. But before they could all celebrate a job well done (and their popular true crime podcast’s successful conclusion), Mabel went to her apartment and discovered another dead body—their co-op building’s grumpy president. All three were arrested, and in Season 2, they’ll have to clear their names before it’s too late. And as of June 28, Only Murders is finally back.
